The fine art nude has been a celebrated subject of photography since the beginning and played an important role in establishing photography as a fine art medium. Early on, both in history and most photographers experience, the nude has been featured in a classical pose and setting, maturing to illustrating the human body as a sculptural abstraction, and with some pushing boundaries. Analog and digital manipulation in all its forms welcome. Monochrome or color, all subjects, analog, digital or antique processes, photographers of all skill levels and locations where legal are welcome. Our juror for The Modern Nude is William Earle. Born in an era prior to the current technology and information sharing society we live in, my first memory of a camera was one my Father owned. It was a Canon 35mm gizmo that he used while serving in the Army in Korea. I clearly remember looking at it and being fascinated with slides he had taken while over seas. While non-functional today I still have it. I have come to realize that it’s the photographer who makes the picture, not the gear and gizmos. The camera is simply a tool, an extension of the photographer. Bill's work has been recognized as "So very simple on the eye with an aura of great confidence and tranquility. Yet, with these apparent restrictions you deliver a sensual but respectful image that's worth visiting and revisiting. Prizes: 25-35 selected images will hang in the SE Center’s virtual gallery space for approximately one month. Peter Lindbergh (1944 – 2019) legendás német fotográfus az 1980-as évek óta a divatfotó egyik legtöbbet emlegetett képviselője. A fotográfiában úttörőként, minimalista eszközökkel az időtlen karaktert kívánta megragadni, egyéni látásmódjával újraértelmezte a szépség fogalmát. Portréinak pózmentes természetessége, a reklám és a divat világában szokatlan stílusa ellentétben áll a korszak szigorúan konstruált képeivel, a divatfényképészet aktuális trendjeivel. The International Photography and Media Art Festival (IPMA) is one of the most significant visual arts platforms in the Baltic region, dedicated to contemporary photography and media art projects. Launched in 2023, it quickly established itself as an essential international event, connecting artists, researchers, educators, and audiences worldwide. At the core of each festival is a timely theme prompting engagement with contemporary issues through visual storytelling and modern art forms. IPMA distinguishes itself with a professionally curated program showcasing a broad spectrum of projects from both international and Lithuanian artists. In 2025, exhibitions will take place in Lithuania’s two major cities, Vilnius and Kaunas, leveraging their cultural potential to engage diverse audiences. Beyond exhibitions, IPMA hosts international discussions, lectures, portfolio reviews, and educational workshops. The festival prioritizes the dissemination of high-quality artistic works, their accessibility, cultural impact, and fosters collaborations among institutions, curators, artists, and emerging creators. IPMA collaborates with international photography and media art festivals, professional organizations, academic institutions, and visual art researchers, aiming to be an inclusive, dynamic, and internationally relevant platform. The International Photography and Media Art Festival (IPMA) invites artists, creators, and researchers to submit applications for participation in the 2025 festival program, scheduled for October 1–31 in Kaunas and Vilnius. This year's theme: IDEAS. CREATIVE AND DESTRUCTIVE Ideas have the power to create worlds – but they can also destroy them. The festival encourages reflection on the influence of ideas in our daily lives, culture, politics, art, and beliefs. Each project serves as a mirror reflecting whether an idea leads to freedom or restriction. Ideas are invisible forces shaping our world. They originate in our minds but their impact can be global – building empires, tearing down walls, creating new art movements, or shifting social norms. Ideas can ignite revolutions, open new horizons of thought, yet equally serve as tools of manipulation, coercion, or fear. The festival theme, “Ideas. Creative and Destructive,” invites artists to explore the nature and ambiguous power of ideas. How do ideas arise within our consciousness? When do they become sources of creativity or ideological weapons? Where is the boundary between inspiration and fanaticism? Ideas influence not just global phenomena but also impact us personally. They permeate everyday decisions, family traditions, and creative choices. Beliefs, gender, identity, the concept of success – all are shaped by ideas, often not our own. They can empower us creatively or subtly constrain us. This theme invites reflection on the underlying aspects of our beliefs. What do we pass from generation to generation? Which ideas do we choose to uphold, and which ones should we release? We invite submissions of projects that raise questions, challenge established norms, and ignite discussion. Prizes: • Exhibition preparation and presentation at IPMA Festival 2025 • Project inclusion in the festival catalog and communication materials • €500 grants for the 4 most original projects Eligibility: The IPMA Festival Open Call is open to all professional and emerging photographers, media artists, and visual arts researchers worldwide. Both individual artists and collectives are eligible to submit projects. Copyrights & Usage Rights: Artists retain full copyright of their submitted works. By participating, artists grant IPMA Festival permission to exhibit their work, publish it in festival catalogs, promotional materials, and digital media with full credit to the artist. Pop culture reflects the values, desires and concerns of contemporary society and is constantly being redefined through its commercial dissemination in the media and consumer culture. The concept of "Non Stop Pop" suggests a constant and unceasing flow of images and symbols that flood the social web and constantly influence our perceptions and expectations. An anthropological interpretation of pop culture focuses on its role as a collective tool for identity formation, creating a kind of "collective ego" expressed through symbols, clothing choices and behaviours, forming communities that are connected through the shared acceptance of these characteristics. The notion of pop culture as a product of consumption is also a crucial dimension to be explored. As a field of incessant commodification and consumption, pop culture images are quickly assimilated by the public, who accept and reproduce them until they are overtaken by new trends. This rapid turnover of trends, which characterises the contemporary consumption pattern, emphasises temporality and ephemerality. In the age of digital communication, pop culture is now infiltrating everyday life not only through traditional media, but also through social networks and the internet. Anyone can create and disseminate content, participating in the incessant production of pop aesthetics. In addition, people's need to be popular and socially recognised has become one of the most dominant characteristics of pop culture. Through the display of moments from their personal lives on social media, many seek to construct an attractive and often carefully crafted image of themselves that exudes prosperity, success and social acceptance. However, the intensity with which online popularity is pursued often raises questions about whether these images represent the truth or whether they are a superficial version of reality. While these platforms foster a sense of connection and recognition, the images presented are often 'filtered' and selected, emphasizing only the brighter aspects of life. Thus, the pursuit of popularity often becomes an end in itself, moving away from authenticity, replacing personal experience with a manufactured narrative, which can create intense psychological pressure and feelings of inadequacy. Finally, in pop culture, colour functions as a central aesthetic tool that enhances the visual immediacy and dynamics of images, making them attractive and widely recognisable. The intense and saturated colours that dominate advertising media, social media and fashion are not limited to a decorative role, but reflect and accentuate the impermanence and speed of consumer culture. The "Non Stop Pop" competition is open to all photographers, both professional and amateur, who wish to present their own perspective on the complex and incessant influence of pop culture. Entries will be judged on the basis of aesthetic composition, originality and thematic depth of shots, which should interpret pop culture with an insightful eye and critical attitude. Through your personal photographic expression, you are invited to highlight the most essential and timeless aspect of pop culture, participating in the dialogue on its role in the contemporary world. Prizes: The overall winner will be awarded with a NIKON Z 30 camera and NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR lens, courtesy of Damkalidis SA. The second and third winners will be awarded with signed photo albums by Alec Soth. One of the top three winners gets the opportunity to participate in the next Photometria event with a solo exhibition. Eligibility: Professional and amateur photographers Copyrights & Usage Rights: Photos must be original work of the participants and the organizer bears no responsibility for any copyright theft. Azért lett e szerkezetes képi elmélkedés, Mert csorba lett a szigetünki hajóközlekedés. Most Pócsmegyeren rekedünk, Vagy nehézkest közlekedünk. A kiállítás témája a dunai vízi közlekedés.
CAPA VISA – On Ludwig Stein • public presentation by photographer, Tim Rod (CH) & archivist, Balázs Som (HU) • FUTURES x Capa Center Residency↴ On Ludwig Stein – public presentation by Balázs Som archivist (Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, Budapest) & Tim Rod artist-in-residence (FUTURES European Photography Platform x Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, Budapest) in English In his ongoing project, Prophetic Futures, Tim ROD, artist-in-residence (FUTURES European Photography Platform x Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center, Budapest), explores the tension between the idea of progress and the real challenges of the present. Based on the work of his great-great-grandfather, Tim engages with Ludwig Steins’ philosophical theory of Evolutionary Optimism from a contemporary perspective. Ludwig Stein (1859-1930) had a rich and varied career. He was born in Hungary, educated in Germany, and served for several years as an Orthodox rabbi in a Berlin congregation. He pursued postgraduate studies in philosophy under Eduard Zeller and in 1889, at the age of 31, he was appointed a full professor of philosophy at the University of Berne, Switzerland. Stein‘s most significant philosophical contribution was his theory of social optimism and progress. Stein contrasts the prophetic- biblical dynamic world view with the classical and oriental view which extols rest. For Judaism and its daughter religions, Christianity and Islam, with their idea of messianic redemption, utopian society and the perfectibility of man still lies in the future and not in the remote past. Although the prophetic ideal may be an illusion, it is the motive force of progress. The concept of Stein‘s social optimism and theory of progress can be critically examined today, especially in the tension between technological development, social justice, and ecological challenges. While the idea of messianic progress remains present in many societal narratives (e.g., the notion of technological utopia or infinite growth), we are simultaneously experiencing crises that call this belief in progress into question: climate change, social inequalities, and political instability. The presentation will be introduced and contextualized by Balázs SOM, archivist (Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, Budapest). Date: April 24, 2025, 6 pm– 7pm Venue: Capa Center, studio Free admission. The event will be held in English Balázs SOM • is one of the archivists of the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, PhD student at the University of Debrecen, Doctoral School of Human Sciences, Faculty of Philosophy. He is writing his doctoral thesis on Roland Barthes. He works in the photographic department of the archives of the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, where he is currently working on the legacy of Samu Szemere (1881–1978), philosopher, writer, aesthete, translator, and member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. In parallel, he is mapping the philosophical milieu and academic life of the first half of the twentieth century. Tim ROD • born 1992, is a Swiss artist based in Bern, Switzerland. He studied photography at CEPV—Vevey School of Photography (ES diploma, 2021) and holds a Master in Contemporary Arts Practice HKB—Bern University of Applied Sciences. He is currently participating in the artist-in-residence program of the FUTURES European Photography Platform in collaboration with the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in the Art Quarter Budapest. The FUTURES x Capa Center Residency Program provides selected emerging photographers with the time, space, and resources to develop new work, with a strong focus on the artistic process and research.
Előhívás: Kardos Sándor↴ Ingyenes beszélgetéssorozatunkban Virágvölgyi István a Capa Központ szakmai igazgatója beszélget Kardos Sándor Kossuth díjas operatőr, filmrendezővel. Alkotómunkája mellett amatőr fényképek gyűjtésével is foglalkozik.
A világról alkotott tudományos képzetek, a múlt tapasztalata, a tárgyakból levonható következtetések kaptak helyet e sajátos gyűjteményekben.
